Ride on the Isle of Wight

Ride on the Isle of Wight

Ref: IT1004D

Ride on the Isle of Wight gives you the opportunity to relive the days of bus travel in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

Filmed on the Isle of Wight mainly during the Running Days organised by the Isle of Wight Bus & Coach Museum.

You can experience the sites and sounds of a 1962 Bristol Lodekka FS on a short route to Carrisbrooke Castle, and then on a longer journey to the Yarmouth ferry terminal and back. SDL268 is a 1959 Bristol Lodekka LD also takes the picturesque journey to Carrisbrooke. If your interest is in single decker's – take a ride on FDL927D, a 1966 Bristol MW for the long and interesting ride on an afternoon tour to Brook.

If you think this video is all Bristol vehicles, well its not! GDL764 is a 1950 Leyland PD2 with Leyland body and previously operated by Seaveiw Services on the Island. We take a ride on this excellently restored vehicle to see the Castle at Carrisbrooke. Another Lodekka to watch out for is TDL998, a 1960, FS example.

All the ‘Bristol’ vehicles were previously operated by the Southern Vectis company.

During our ‘ride’ on the island we take a look at the Isle of Wight Bus & Coach Museum on a ‘Running Day’, with visiting vehicles and some of the exhibits. Unfortunately the video does not do justice to them – you must come and see for yourself!

Many thanks go to the Museum for making this video possible.

Seaviews on the Isle of Wight

Seaviews on the Isle of Wight

Ref: IT1011D

There are many ‘seaviews’ on the Isle of Wight, this video deals with two aspects. Firstly, ex. ‘SEAVIEW SERVICES’, GDL764, an all Leyland Titan PD2. She celebrated her 50th Birthday on 7th May 2000, this video was made to mark the occasion.

We see her on her special day running her former route from Ryde to Seaview. Ex. ‘SOUTHERN VECTIS’ Bristol MW 806 helped out carrying extra passengers and acted as a camera stand for the return trip! GDL764 is usually on show at the Isle of Wight Bus Museum.

The second aspect of ‘seaviews’ is that of the open top bus operations on the island. We first look at Route 42, home to the ‘SOUTHERN VECTIS’ Lodekka LD open top fleet. The 1999 views show them in all cream livery, and video shots this year in their smart apple green and cream guise. There is spectacular footage of them climbing to the Battery for views of the Needles and the English south coast. Route 44 is next, operating in Sandown and Shanklin. Here we see the recently converted Bristol VR’s, also painted apple green and cream – and running for the ‘VILLAGE BUS COMPANY’, climbing up from the Esplanade at Shanklin, running through the old village, and at many other points on the route. The 88 service is operated by ‘WESTBROOK TRAVEL’, and is a coastal and inland route. The vehicles we see running the 2000 season are a pair of mark 2 Bristol VRT’s, one a former ‘UNITED AUTO’, the other from the ‘WESTERN NATIONAL’ group.

We conclude with a montage of shots of the ‘Old Girl’ – CDL899, who celebrated her 60th Birthday in 1999. So sit back and enjoy the views!

Southern Vectis - CDL 899 A 60th Birthday Celebration

Southern Vectis - CDL 899 A 60th Birthday Celebration

Ref: IT1005D

CDL899 is a very remarkable survivor. A Bristol K5G with 56 seat bodywork by Eastern Coachworks built in 1939, she remains on the Isle of Wight with her original owner and operator, Southern Vectis, sixty years and 775,000 miles later.

Originally a “highbridge” double decker, and used predominantly on Ryde - Newport - Cowes services conveying shipyard workers. The bus was converted to open top form in 1959 for seasonal operation in the Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor area. For many years she was the regular bus on service 44 between Sandown Zoo and Shanklin Esplanade, and then for a period in the early 1980’s worked a scenic circular route from Ryde, but in recent years she has been used on service 42 from Yarmouth.

To commemorate her 60th anniversary, she was repainted in original pre war apple green livery, and two island tours, featured in this production, were ran in July 1999, taking in some of her former routes, and the present day open top service from Yarmouth to Alum Bay and the Needles, a route which features spectacular coastal scenery.

A special Thank You to John Woodhams and CDL 899 for making this film possible.

Southern Vectis - Farewell VR

Southern Vectis - Farewell VR

Ref: IT1007D

On Saturday 29th January 2000 a tour was organised to say farewell to the Bristol VRT’s that served the Isle of Wight with Southern Vectis.

This video follows 685 (DPX685W) on that day completing a tour of the island. We call at Ryde, Ventnor, Yarmouth and Newport and see 685 in a number of locations where the VR’s ran.

SVOC operated 68 new, and 13 secondhand VR’s from 1969 onwards, a number of them can be seen in the ‘Photo Gallery’ on this programme. The first VR, 622 (NDL490G) is seen being restored from a treelopper at Ryde depot. For added interest we take a quick spin on RELL6G 863 (TDL563K), still in service with SVOC, also at Ryde. Look out for preserved Bristol FS6G TDL998 making a brief appearance at Yarmouth. 3 former SVOC VR’s are filmed in action with SOLENT BLUE LINE. It’s not quite farewell to the VR, because 681 is converted to open-top to run along former stable-mates with the newly formed ‘VILLAGE BUS CO’.

Thanks must go to Richard Newman for driving on the day. Also other members of the IOW Bus Museum that helped to produce this video, commemorating over 30 years of VR service on the Isle of Wight.

Southern Vectis - The Last Lodekka?

Southern Vectis - The Last Lodekka?

Ref: IT1018D

The Bristol Lodekka has enjoyed a long life on the Isle of Wight. From the first deliveries of Mark 1 LD’s in 1954, the introduction of the FS in 1960, to the final FLF’s in the late 1960’s.

Some of the oldest LD’s have enjoyed a ‘second’ life operating in the form of Open Toppers. In the latter years, their domain was that of route number 42 from Freshwater to the Needles Battery. When new in the 1950’s, they operated in a livery of Tilling green and cream, they later ran in NBC green and white. Then in OT form, there were a number of schemes from white and green, blue and green to all over Tilling cream, then to their final scheme of apple green and cream, matching the ‘Old Girl’ – the 1939 K5G reviving the original livery from the 1930’s.

This video programme follows 500 (MDL955) on the ‘possible’ farewell tour of the Island. Filmed on the 12th of August 2001, we follow her around the Island from Ryde depot to Bembridge, Sandown, Ventnor, Newport and out to Brook. We then take the 42 to the Needles Battery. Our camera rides on 500 as well as filming her through the picturesque villages, towns and the landscape of the Island. There is a Picture Gallery of the Lodekka’s in service with Southern Vectis. The video then reviews their operations in recent years.

Thanks go to John Woodhams for arranging the trip and driving 500 on a most enjoyable, memorable and historic tour – on a vehicle type that has served the Island for some 47 years.
