New Horizons Vol. 1: Irish Railways

Ref: TR809D

Price:£15.00

This film looks at Ireland's rail system and features the passenger services. When this production was made, were nearly all loco-hauled. The broad gauge system boasts many miles of single track main line, still controlled by traditional semaphore signals. Well maintained and attractive rural stations contrast with the ornate and busy stations at Dublin, while the whole network boasts a distinctive and nostalgic character.

  • We see the contrasts of the magnificent coastal scenery as seen from the cab of a Dublin to Rosslare express as it journeys south. Highlights along the route include Bray Head, and the five miles per hour inter city main line along the quay side at Wexford. There's also a visit behind the scenes to the fascinating and busy Inchicore works where Ireland's loco fleet is maintained.
  • Present traffic flows on the Dublin to Belfast corridor, which is at the moment being upgraded, are examined. Also featured are suburban services in Northern Ireland and Dublin, as well as the highly successful DART service.
  • Main line steam specials, expertly organised by the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland are a regular feature of the Irish calendar. We take the opportunity to watch ex Dublin & South Eastern K2 loco number 461 steam from Dublin across Ireland towards Westport on the west coast.
  • There is also a visit to the headquarters of the RPSI at Whitehead, in Northern Ireland. Other features include the Cork to Dublin main line, as well as the Cobh, Youghal, Sligo and Ballina branch lines.
  • Also highlighted are the main freight flows.

New Horizons Vol. 3: Russia: Caucasus & Black Sea

Ref: TR815D

Price:£15.00

Until fairly recently much of Russia was closed to Western visitors and consequentially the vast majority of the huge railway network, particularly away from the main lines, has remained unexplored. Since the break up of the Soviet Union and the railway network into independent units, the chance has arisen for the first Western railway entrepreneurs to sample some of the worlds most intensively used railway networks.

While in theory it's possible to travel independently to most parts of the former USSR, in practice there are formidable obstacles to overcome - not least the language and lack of reliable internal air flights. Fortunately G W Travel, which specialises in Russian rail tours, has been able to overcome these problems.

In this unique programme we join Nigel Harris for the trip of a lifetime. During the course of a 3,000 kilometre ten day tour - hauled exclusively by Russian steam loco's- through the beautiful Russian Caucasus and Black Sea regions, Nigel is able to give the viewer an expert insight into Russian railways.

As well as a close look at the wide variety of steam locomotives used on the tour, this superbly filmed programme also features an extensive look at everyday traffic in this busy part of Russia, highlighting both freight and passenger trains throughout the Caucasus.

There's also a contrasting look at many stations each complete with their own exotic platform life that is now so common in Russia.

This video includes magnificent main line steam action and station/town visits to the following principle locations:-

  • Tikhoretsk, Mineralnye-Vody, Armavir, Pyatigorsk, Kislovodsk, Tuapse, Sochi, Adler, Krasnodar, Krymsk, Kavkaz.
  • Also featured are these equally interesting branch lines:- Zheleznovodsk, Apsheronsk, Guamsky Canyon, Novorossiysk.
  • Steam classes featured:- E, FD, SO, L, LV, Su, P36 also the following modern traction classes:- TE3, VL80, ER2, TEM2, VL8, 2TE 10M, CHS4T.

Due to the tremendous significance of the current Chinese rail scene TeleRail are pleased to announce that we will be producing several programmes featuring China. These will combine to produce an unprecedented in depth guide to what is undoubtedly the most important and least explored national rail network in the world.

What is now the largest communist country in the world is seeing an unprecedented growth in rail traffic flows - thanks mainly to a booming domestic economy that skilfully combines western market forces with communism. Infact, such has been the enormous growth of rail traffic that at present there are simply not enough wagons or new locos to cope! The result is that many steam locos that undoubtedly would have otherwise been retired by now are still in daily use.

To put it quite simply, there is nowhere in the world that can still provide such a volume of spectacular main line steam action as China currently does. However, modern diesel loco's are being produced at an enormous rate, and together with further batches of electric locos change is quickly coming. This is a particularly fascinating time to visit China, with many steam sheds looking reminiscent of British depots towards the end of steam; as the diesels gradually invade the steam locos traditional domain. With distinctive scenery and steep gradients there is certainly no need for artificial 'runpasts' - this programme features 100% everyday Chinese rail action. China volume one includes:-

Tangshan locomotive works where SY steam locomotives are seen under construction and on test.

A round up of modern traction types that can be seen at work today including classes DF4, DF7, BJ, 8K, ND4, ND5,

Mainline & branchline passenger steam action with classes QJ, SY & JS.

Depot visits at Baotou and Nancha.

Mainline & branchline steam freight including Baotou to Bayan Obo, and Nancha to Hongshan.

Industrial steam is spotlighted at the huge Jalainur opencast coal pit.

There's also our first look at the most spectacular steam line in China close to the Gobi Desert in Inner Mongolia at Zhongwei, where double headed, and even occasional triple headed QJ hauled freights are featured battling their way up the newly doubled track towards Gantang.

Our second part of this most detailed look at the current Chinese rail scene includes a close look at two of the most impressive industrial locations in China; the giant steel works at Anshan and Baotou. These two huge sites both employ a huge variety of steam and more modern traction on their complex site operations. Anshan features on shed and on site JS & SY plus their unique Skoda electrics, while Baotou features JS, SY, YJ & GK1F.

There's more sensational double headed QJ steam action on the top part of the steep climb at Zhongwei around Changliushui where many locos take water and clean out their fires before the final ascent to Gantang.

There's also a contrasting look at contemporary diesel hauled freight flows up the climb at Zhongwei.

Both diesel passenger and steam hauled freight are featured at Harbin.

There's a look at two contrasting colliery lines at Xintaizi near Shenyang and the No 2 Coal mine at Tangshan featuring SY and YJ steam action.

Finally there's a look at Sujiatun steam museum and depot, plus a very poignant look at some Chinese scrap lines contrasted with a summary of typical present day steam action.
