An archive film exploring the development of electric power on the third rail electrified routes of the Southern.

The Southern Railways units from the 1920s and 1930s, the 4 COR units, the ‘Brighton Belle’, the EPBs of the British Railways era, the last of the 2 BILs and special trains are all featured using film shot from the 1920s to the 1980s.

In addition we look at the Mark One stock of the British Railways era, with the CIGs, VEPs, COPs, BIGs, and CEPs using archive film shot over a period of 40 years.

Finally the Class 71s and Class 73s are illustrated on a range of traffic.

Locations include Waterloo, Victoria, London Bridge, the Brighton main line, Clapham Junction, the main line to Southampton, Wandsworth Road, Worthing and Surbiton.
