Settle to Carlisle: The Four Seasons (75-mins)

Settle to Carlisle: The Four Seasons (75-mins)

Ref: TR161D

Price:£30.00

Quantity:

Over the last few decades, there have been many TV profiles of the beautiful Settle to Carlisle railway. However, only Tele Rail based at nearby Carnforth, are in a unique position to capture all the best rail activity right through the year. From the incredible winter of snows of 2010 throughout the following seasons, this programme gives a unique insight into the character of this wonderful line contrasting steam, freight and everyday passenger movements along the whole route. In just 72 miles between Settle and Carlisle there are 14 tunnels and over 20 viaducts. So it’s hardly surprising that for many rail fans this wonderful line with its unique mixture of magnificent Victorian engineering and wonderful scenery represents the most scenic railway journey in England today. The line has survived two very misguided attempts to close it – once in the early 1960s and later in the 1980s. However, today this extraordinary line is once again very busy with freight and passengers who now benefit from the millions of pounds invested in both the track and stations in recent years.

The Allure of the West Country 1969 to 2015

Ref: TR876D

Price:£30.00

Mike Ellis has been travelling and photographing the Exeter to Penzance line for over 45 years and has seen a huge change in motive power from Warships, Westerns, Peaks, 31’s, 37’s, 47’s, 50’s, HST’s, through to the 57’s , 66’s, 67’s and also the Voyagers.

Mike started with 8mm cine film in 1969 and made several visits in the 70’s to catch the final services with ‘Western’ traction, including milk traffic from Lostwithiel.

He also covered the last weekend of special steam runs to Ashburton, before closure as part of the Dart Valley Railway.

The extensive library also features: • The large logo class 50’s in the 1980’s that worked services alongside the Class 47’s and HST’s. There’s also a look at the GWR 150 celebrations and the last summer of the Dawlish semaphores.

• The 90’s brought the end of the class 50’s with the class 47’s taking over passenger, mail and sleeper services. Freight traffic includes Moorswater cement and china clay to Fowey dock’s.

Steam specials have always been popular, especially the Dawlish Donkey trains. The first year of these services ran with Great Western tank 1450.

The privatisation of the railways in the 1990’s brought the first of many different liveries for Great Western HST’s and also for Virgin services.

• The start of the new millennium saw new traction on the mail and freight services with 67’s and 66’s for EWS.

Porterbrook trialled 57601, before First Great Western started using a fleet of the class on the sleeper and passenger service.

Also featured is the last year of the Virgin Cross Country services using the class 47’s before the introduction of the Voyagers.

The programme ends with a roundup of steam and diesel specials, including a quick look at services up to 2015.

Railwaymen Reminiscing - Memories of North West Steam: Episodes 1 & 2

Railwaymen Reminiscing - Memories of North West Steam: Episodes 1 & 2

Ref: TR178D

Price:£30.00

Quantity:

Uses newly discovered archive film and many interviews this series sets out to tell the story of what life was like for the men who worked on the railway with steam, from cleaners to controllers and footplate crews mainly in their own words.

In some ways, thanks mainly to nostalgic archive programmes, it seems like only yesterday when steam was an everyday sight. Although we are indeed lucky to be able to enjoy so much cine film from the days of working steam, up until now recording the more social side of everyday life for the railwaymen in their own words has been somewhat neglected.

This is an important social record of what life was really like delving into every aspect of a typical working day explained by each person using their own words and carefully illustrated with suitable archive film.

[NOTE: This is a single DVD that contains two complete productions. They used to be available individually.]

The Final Years of BR Steam

The Way We Were Part 1: The 1950s and 1960s (62-mins)

As Britain began to emerge from the austerity of the post war years many ordinary people, had for the first time ever, enough spare cash to buy a cine camera. This was still somewhat of a luxury though, as cine film throughout the 1950s and 1960s was, by today's home video standards, very expensive.

Thousands of families began to film their holidays, outings, and those more memorable family occasions. While others also took the opportunity to film more commonplace everyday activities including children playing in the street, local fetes or a visit to town.

Television was not the dominant force it is today, and after the ritual of setting up the projector and screen many happy evenings would be spent watching the results in a darkened room at home.

Carefully and sensitively crafted together by North West Video Productions this first volume, in a unique series, forms a fascinating and lively look back at the 1950s and 60s. This is definitely not the official Britain of the newsreels or commercial cinema, but a warm and poignant account of everyday events filmed by ordinary people - showing what life was really like during the post war years.

This unique programme, made entirely from original cine films complete with discreet sound effects and music, is complimented by a thought provoking script written and introduced by Neil Patrick - Editor of Yours magazine.

You'll find the memories come flooding back as we focus on a huge variety of topics including:-

Children - at school and at play, long before the days of leisure wear and trainers. With so few cars and lorries around children were safe to play in the street, where the only distractions were the milkman and his horse, or the chimes from a distinctive ice cream van.

Street Scenes - lots of contrasting views, from small villages to large towns - highlighting shops, passing traffic and fashions.

Everyday life - including wine making, summer fetes and Christmas - always the main family event in any year but just look at those fashions and the presents.

Transport - lots of everyday scenes including a steam train journey from Leamington Spa to Birmingham, trolley buses at Walsall, and Glasgow's distinctive trams.

Royal Visits - a memorable day with Royal visits to Rugeley & Barmouth.

Holidays - when overseas package holidays were virtually unknown! Lots of nostalgic scenes in the West Country, including camping and caravan holidays, picnics and visits to St Ives, Lands End, and Lynton & Lynmouth. Also holidays on the Isle of Wight featuring the famous pier, and the first road round-a-bout on the Island.

Farming - before giant machines took over most duties there were still some horses and early tractors at work, while the farmyards provided a haven for children to play in.

Family motoring - for the lucky few a new car meant extra freedom - although many early roads were already starting to jam up. Never mind though there was still plenty of room on the newly opened M6 & M1 motorways!

If you are old enough to remember the 1950s and 60s this unique video will rekindle many pleasant memories. If you're too young to remember those exciting years, this programme will give you an excellent impression of just what you missed !
