Snow Scene (Part One) Mid-Hants Mid-Winter: A BR Mogul on a typical cross-country three coach train struggles ‘over the Alps’ in the snow.

Cab Ride – Swansea to Swindon: On 1 February 1991 we travel aboard an HST through South Wales to the Severn Tunnel and then from Bristol to Swindon via Badminton.

The 26 Interlude: Inside Glasgow’s Springburn Works the BRCW class 26s are undergoing heavy overhaul for the Engineers. We see 26001/5 under repair, together with 37128/427 and then see 26s at work elsewhere, 26002 at Cockenzie, 26004 in two liveries, 26046 at Falkland Yard and 26038/41 at Mossend.

Railfreight Customers (Part Two) Fitzgerald Lighting: The most unlikely Speedlink working – over the preserved Bodmin Branch, with a green 08 and main line 47s.

Snow Problems: BR’s headache with the ‘wrong sort of snow’, with an HST at Ribblehead, 142 at Skipton, 156s and a 156/158 pair at Aviemore, units at Basingstoke and Hook (455 and 442) EPB/CIG at Faversham, 321s and 310s at Northampton and a diverted 87/82 from the WCML.

Snow Worries: Preservation coped well on the Middleton with Mirvale and Harry at Embsay with Primrose, 5407 and the P3 on the KWVR, then the P3 struggling uphill on the KWVR, ‘Big engines’ on the East Lancs with 75078 and 76079 and on the GCR with 5029 Nunney Castle, 5593 Kolhapur and 35005 and 34072 on the Swanage Railway.

Snow Scene (Part Two) Strathspey Hogmanay: In early January 5025 works over the picturesque Strathspey line in a thick layer of snow. Main Line Steam: ‘Many a slip’ with 5305 in Monessie Gorge, 6201 at Cumwinton, 5407 in snow at Skipton and 71000 on the S&C. 771 at Howe & Co. and Kirkby Stephen, 35028 on the ‘Last’ Marylebone, 46203 at Oxford, 6024 at Oxford and Didcot, 71000 at Conway and 34027 at Little Stretton.

The Cambrian Limited: The full story of the summers highlight of 7819 Hinton Manor and 75069 at work again from Machynlleth shed over the picturesque Cambrian mainline.

Archive Film: Eddie Stanbridge’s 16mm colour film from the 1960s includes steam on the Cambrian at Cheltenham on the Southern at Eastleigh, on the Somerset & Dorset and in Scotland.

Cab Ride – Thornton Junction to Mossend: With the demise of Speedlink we cab rode a pair of class 20s on one of Scotland’s last Speedlink duties.

Speedlink – The Final Days: BRs Speedlink network was abandoned at the beginning of July. This feature illustrates the wide variety of traffic which has now been lost to the roads – from wood to oil.

Preservation News Focus: From the Torbay and Dartmouth’s Diesel Gala, to 6106 on WSR, ELR No.1 on ESR, ‘The Blue Circle’, 34072 in Yorkshire, Rocket on the GCR and the Isle of Wight at Smallbrook.

The East Lancashire Railway (Part 1): A Railscene ‘Spotlight’ feature on the southern half of this adventurous railway, with 35005 Canadian Pacific, the N7, 75078 and 30072 amongst the regulars.

Regional Railways – The Loco Lives!: The summer of 1991 saw a resurgence of loco-hauled on the supposedly ‘Sprinterised’ Regional Railways network – we see classes 20, 26, 31, 37 and 47 ‘on loan’ to RR.

BR Newslines: The news from BR, including 87101, 85101, 59104 on the West and East coast, Gloucester Rail Day with quadruple headed 20s, 91 in Edinburgh, last days of Bury Electrics, new Provincial livery, etc.

Main Line Steam News: A busy summer gives great variety of main line steam, the highlight being 7000o Britannia’s main line steam test, at Crewe, Chester, Chirk and Weston Rhya, the lineside repairs at Shrewsbury and her run on one cylinder and her main line return, at Gresford, Marsh Farm Junction Condover and Haslem. ‘Carnforth Phoenix’ includes 70000 and 71000 together, with 48151 at seven locations on the Cumbrian Coast line. 5407 and 6201 also appear here. The S&C sees 6201 and 46203 together at last, with seven other action shots and 71000 on her record run. ‘Going West’ are 46229 and 45596 whilst 5029 Nunney Castle ran her first main line trip with InterCity’s ‘Inter-City’ to Malvern, seen at Charlbury, Moreton-in-Marsh, Malvern Wells, Worcester, Great Malvern and Frampton Mansell. ‘North Wales Visitors’ are 777 (five shots), 4472 (two shots) and 4771 (three shots). A ‘Cambrian Reprise’ gives more action of 7819 and 75069.

Bury to Manchester Transition: Commissioning trials with the new trams precede views from both the cab and lineside of this northern suburban system at the end of the line for class 504.

The East Lancashire Railway (Part Two): Concluding our feature, this time we follow the newly-opened extension from Rawtenstall to Ramsbottom, featuring many locomotives, including visiting 34072 and 35005.

Dean Forest City: They are expanding down in the Forest of Dean and City of Truro was there to open the line to Lydney Lakeside. Footplate and lineside views record the event.

BR Newslines: The launch of the Parcels livery at Crewe and locos in service in the livery, last Whitehaven TPO, 20s on the Cumbrian Coast, D1500 on tour, Inter City 60, diversions to St Pancras, 73101 and 73128, Bluebell Special, HST at Branksome, all-blue 4TC, 50029 on tour.

Nightmare on Table 145 (Part 2.5): ‘The Smell of Fearless’. More problems for NSE on the Waterloo to Exeter route, with four 33s at Waterloo, Parcels 47s and the last few 50s still holding out.

Fiddlers Ferry Power: A detailed review of Trainload Coal’s major coal operation in the northwest, from 20s at Point of Ayr colliery, Mostyn and Newton-le-Willows, shunting at Warrington, double-headed 56s, 60s at Fiddler’s Ferry, close-ups inside the terminal and 20s taking the train away.

A Gaggle of Galas: Galas on the North Wales Coast, at Worksop, Old Oak Common. Laira and Cambridge gave rise to a bewildering variety of train formations and locomotive pairings! Multiple 20s, 58s, 37s, 59 and 60, 50s, 52s, 26s, 31s and even the blue 303 in East Anglia!

Branch Line Steam: The N7, 69621 appeared on the Marks Tey to Sudbury branch at Christmas – this is the story of a highly successful event.

Cab Ride – West of England: The view from the cab of one of Foster Yeoman’s Class 59s over the Great Western’s main line to the West of England, from Merehead to Theale. This is an edited version of our Cab Ride Xtra No. 2 and includes scenes at Foster Yeoman’s base at Merehead.

Main Line Steam: An exciting winter on the main lines, despite the cancellations. We explore the return of steam to Paddington, with 5029 and 6024 on the line to Stratford, 34027, 60009 and 6201 on the Welsh Marches. The ‘Sapper’s’ final run, as 48773, including a spectacular ascent of the bank through Entwistle, 5407s long return from Scotland, over the West Highland, Glasgow and South Western and Settle and Carlisle Railways, 60009 and 34027 on the S&C, 60004 in Scotland and a preview of next year’s star – 256 Glen Douglas.

BR Newslines:
A green EMU at Folkestone (5001), Pathfinders in Kent (Class 56), the first Networker electric (465001), 50s and 33s and Salisbury, 60 at Padiham, Tilbury Riverside under threat, 153s in service, 507 and 321 re-liveried, Newcastle Airport extension, etc.

NSE Diesel Specials: January and February saw an enterprising series of diesel headed specials on the Southern from Waterloo to Weymouth and Yeovil, with a selection of diesel power which has not been seen on this region for many a year. This feature covers Classes 59, 56, 37, 47 and 60 piloting 33s and 47s, as well as the ‘Eastleigh Shuttle’ with an 08.

Great Central Winter: Spectacular smoke effects in cold weather on this expanding main line – with an amazing variety of locomotives for the winter – 7760, 7029, 6990, 35005, 5593 and ‘Butler Henderson’ at the end of her stay on the GCR.

Preservation Roundup: Other preserved lines had something to show in winter as well, especially Peak Rail, whose Darley Dale line opened at Christmas. We see the newest preserved line there and also 46203s unique run at Butterley, the H Class 0-4-4 tank on the Bluebell, winter season trains on the Severn Valley, Torbay and Dartmouth and West Somerset. Finally, we see NELPGs special train to welcome back Blue Peter on the North Yorkshire Moors line and the engine’s Main Line test run from Derby.

Opening Scene: M7 30053 plus two ‘Queen Mary’ vans on the main line.

South Eastern Steam: The story of Steam from Hastings to Ashford with 75069 and 34027, together with the historic runs up the third rail main line to London Bridge, including many scenes at the capital terminus.

Clerestory Story: The South Devon Railway of today recreated the historic turn of the century by running City of Truro with the clerestory coaches on one remarkable day in June. Llangollen Gala: This progressive railway has extended yet again, to Glyndyfrdwy. Its summer gala saw a variety of trains over the whole line, set alongside the River Dee, with Foxcote Manor, a Jinty, a Prairie and visiting P3 0-6-0 on a goods train.

Main Line Steam: What a feast! May, in particular, was a very active month for main line steam and we see 44932 and 67621 on LT metals, 3440s last run, 6024 and 5029, 5407, 4472, 4771, 60009, 71000, 48151, 80080 and 60532 – thirteen locos at work in five weeks, as well as the Southern Steam engines! Who said there is a recession?!

Scottish Indian Summer: There has been a major revival of ‘real’ trains in Scotland, with locomotives hauling coaches again! We witness 37s, 47s and 26s working trains to Fort William, Kyle of Lochalsh, Inverness, Aberdeen and Edinburgh, as well as the changes to sleepers and the introductions of a stagecoach on rails.

Cab Ride – Settle to Carlisle: By special request we bring you the return of an S&C cab ride – this time going north. Here is the opportunity to see some of those photographic locations from the driver’s viewpoint!

BR Newslines:
50s in decline, including last scheduled passenger trains, 31s on passenger turns, the French Portal of the Channel Tunnel, 33114 in NSE, Networkers at Paddington, Ravenscraig closure, Manchester Trams in the city, 37s on special work, etc.

Opening Scene: 4771 Green Arrow leaves Howe & Co's Siding for the last time on her present boiler certificate.

The Northern Belle:Steam returned to the North East of Scotland for the summer of 1992, with 44871 Sovereign working a series of Aberdeen to Elgin trains. This is the story of the first public run.

Mogul Mania: The Severn Valley’s Collett 2-6-0 9303 has been one of the summer’s stars - here we see her in action on the Valley, together with Stanier 2-6-0 Number 2968 and we chronicle the visit of Standard Class 4 Mogul 76079 to the Llangollen Railway.

Preservation Focus: The unique Bulleid class Q1 - the 'ugly duckling' - is seen on its first run, 34072 and 4422 visit the East Lancs, M7 30053 at work at Swanage, Pannier 7752 and 4920 Dumbleton Hall alongside the River Dart in South Devon and 60532 Blue Peter's one and only trip up the KWVR.

Main Line Steam: The theme is ‘hale and farewell’ as we say ‘goodbye’ to 4771 Green Arrow and Black 5 5305 and ‘hello’ to 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley. Also featured are 6201 and 60532 on the S&C, as well as 70000 and 71000 in North Wales, together with 45596 Bahamas and 6024 working to Stratford.

The First Train: New Year’s Day 1993 witnessed a blanket of frost over Southern England, a perfect backdrop for the Kent & East Sussex Railway’s AIX tank to be launched with its one coach train.

South Coast Changes: A study over the past four years of the last part of the Sussex Coast main line to lose its semaphore signals and crossing gates. Before and after scenes are shown at Fishbourne and Bosham, with freight from Lavant and crossings at Black Boy, Inlands Road and Clay Lane.

70004 William Shakespeare was brought back to life for a special day. We see her at Eastleigh, Stewarts Lane and Dover. 70000 Britannia then visited the Mid-Hants and we see her double heading with 76017 and accompanying 30053 and 30506 as well as the ‘Hampshire’ unit.

Premier Run: Eastleigh’s ‘own’ steam locomotive, Maunsell S15 828 is seen on a main line steam test, including a daylight run through Southampton station.

The 08.00am Local From Carlisle: Standard Class 4 Tank 80080 on the unique steam local trains on the Settle & Carlisle.

The Great Central Southern: 34105 Swanage visiting the Great Central, together with a Pannier on the ‘Windcutter’ and 4472 Flying Scotsman on the East Lancashire Railway.
