The Somerset and Dorset closed in 1966. A local enthusiast and railwayman, Terry Nicholls, whose still photography is quite well known, he has been in the Glorious Years in the Steam Railway magazine, turned his cine camera to the line in its last two years. Unlike some videos of the line, this covers the Bristol to Bath via Mangotsfleld route before venturing south to Templecombe and the Highbridge branch from Evercreech. Specials are also covered right up to the last day of working, with 4F, 8F and West Country pacifics.

Today the railways of Somerset have been decimated. In the 1960’s there were so many interconnecting branches feeding the main lines through the county. Once again, Jim visited them before closure and has left us this invaluable record of the country railway. We begin in the north of the country with rare 1930’s footage of the Weston Clevedon and Portishead Railway. Scenes of the Clevedon miniature railway before the complete length of the Cheddar Valley and East Somerset line from Yatton to Witham. The long lamented Somerset and Dorset line from Bath to Templecombe with its 2-8-0’s and 4F’s mingling with Standards and Ivatt tanks. The Highbridge and Burnham branch the whole length to the sea before heading for Taunton and all stations to Chard. Eastwards to Yeovil Junction, Town and Pen Mill to traverse the route back to Taunton via Martock and Athelney all stations. A Summer Saturday at Norton Fitzwarren in 1959 leads to a journey by DMU over the Minehead line before closure and preservation. Finally with GWR moguls to Dulverton from Taunton. A veritable wealth of nostalgia. (Also Available on DVD)

Few railways could rival the character and charm of the Somerset & Dorset. From the climb out of Bath Green Park to the fierce gradients of the Mendip Hills around Midsomer Norton and Shepton Mallet where locomotives struggled with heavy trains packed with holidays makers. From the mysterious Somerset Levels around Glastonbury and Highbridge, through to the beautiful rolling countryside close to Blandford Forum and Templecombe the S & D has rightly grown to be one of the country's most famous lines.

This DVD contains 60-minutes of superb archive cine film and allows us once again to relive the delights of a journey over this most famous of railway lines. The DVD takes a look at the whole line starting at Bournemouth West. We then progress towards Bath taking a look at each of the stations with lineside action in between. Highlights include some very rare shots of the remains of the original S & D line from Corfe Mullen to Wimborne and an elderly 3F shunting at Shillingstone and Stalbridge. Templecombe is looked at in depth with views not only of the peculiar reversal undertaken by S & D trains but also at workings on the Southern region main line and some marvellous shots of the Motive Power Depot.

At Cole we see where the line crossed the Western Region before we arrive at Evercreech Junction. Here the camera of Stan Peerless takes the timeless journey down the branch to Glastonbury and Highbridge. Highlights of this section include footage of a goods train on the level crossing at Highbridge before we see the locomotive being turned inside Highbridge Works. We also catch scenes of the Saturdays only passenger working to Burnham-on-Sea before we return to Evercreech Junction.

As we carry north we catch scenes of trains passing over the summit of the line at Masbury and through the beautiful countryside around Midford and so into Bath Green Park. Accompanying the film there are interviews with some of the men who worked on the S & D as well as people who travelled the line. Their reminiscences help to bring back many treasured memories of the Somerset & Dorset.

In 1965 Gordon Dando had the rare opportunity of taking a footplate ride over the Somerset & Dorset from Bath Green Park to Templecombe & back. The cine film he took during the journey is here coupled with views taken from the carriage window and numerous lineside shots to provide a unique picture f the northern sections of the S & D.

Despite the imminent closure of the Somerset & Dorset a wide variety of locomotives is seen working both passenger and goods trains.

Having completed the journey the DVD then takes a look at the branch from Evercreech Junction to Highbridge. Each of the stations on the line is featured whilst some poignant shots at the end of the end show reently abandoned track bed at Burnham on Sea.

The DVD is accompanied by a brief commentary giving details of the trains and locations seen. With over 45 minutes of superb colour cine film and authentic sound from the archives of Peter Handford, this is as close to experiencing a journey over the S & D as you are likely to get over 40 years after the closure of the line.

Diesels over the S & D! Believe it or not this fascinating railway played host to regular diesel hauled demolition trains into the late 1960s. In this programme we rake a ride aboard one of these workings, firstly from Bath to radstock and then from Radstock to Templecombe and return. On the way we explore the railway a short time after the last passenger services, and watch some long lost diesel classes hard at work at various locations along the route. In addition we include some glimpses of the "way things were" just a few months earlier. Includes Bath, radstock, Midsomer Norton, Evercreech Junction and Templecombe station and surroundings. Filmed mostly during the summer of 1965, the final full year before closure in March 1966, the journey takes the viewer on the line from Bath to Evercreech Junction, then along the branch to Highbridge and Burnham, before returning to the main line to continue a journey southwards from Evercreech to Bournemouth. As well as lineside, many sequences were taken from the footplate or from the carriage window.

This DVD is based around original cine film made by the British Aircraft Corporation Railway Society Film Unit and by Peter Barnfield and David Williams.

Pines Express (45-mins) (VHS)

Pines Express (45-mins) (VHS)

Ref: BL274

Price:£19.96

In the Spring of 1962 it was announced that the Pines Express was to be re-routed away from the Somerset and Dorset to run via Oxford and Basingstoke at the end of the summer timetable. On hearing the sad news, Gordon Dando was determined to make a record of the S & D's most famous train. The result of Gordon's camerawork and sound recordings have left us with a fantastic record of the train from Bath Green Park through to Evercreech Junction. Lineside sequences are blended with views from the train and the film is held together by an authentic sound track recorded by Gordon onboard the Pines Express.

On reaching Evercreech Junction we return to Bath on a local stopping train hauled by a 4F. On the 8th September 1962, "Evening Star" hauled the final Pines Express over the Mendips and again we have scenes taken on board the train and at Evercreech Junction. The second part of the video has scenes taken at Bath Green Park motive power depot.

Classes of locomotive that can be seen include 4F, 7F & 8F as well as Great Western interlopers, Pannier Tank 3742 and the very rare appearance of 7023 "Penrice Castle" in May 1965.

The final part of the video documents a special run over the line by the Warwickshire Railway Society. We travel on board from Bath Green Park to Bournemouth Central behind 9F 92238. At Bounemouth locomotives are changed and we proceed to Eastleigh Works behind West Country 34097 "Holsworthy". We catch some brief scenes inside the works before the video concludes with the return run through Basingstoke and Didcot.
