Welcome back to Austria. We are in the mountains now, first along the Inn valley and then the Sanna. This is the Arlbergbahn (Westbahn) - one of the great scenic railways of Europe. Once again it's a line being modernised, sections that have not changed for decades are juxtaposed with a 21st century railway. Not the busiest section of our run but scenically most dramatic on the sunny day of our visit.

Along the way we are passed by wagonload trains that epitomise the local ecomomy - lumber! then import traffic from Switzerland and then oil. But more interesting is the number of lineside facilities full of railwagons! This is not after all the Ruhr! As far as Ötztal, 45km from Innsbruck, the Arlbergbahn is a modern double track 140 -160 kph railway. Beyond, there is still much work to be done to bring the railway to modern standards, although some projects such as the Landeck NBS with its 2.3km tunnel have been completed. A run through some serious country for all to enjoy.

At St Anton we plunge into the double track Arlbergtunnel, it's 10km long but we don't keep you in the dark! Instead we take the opportunity to tell you what the future has in store for ÖBB services between Vienna, Salzburg and the Vorarlberg. It's a complicated story that involves DB and SBB! The Arlbergbahn descent to Bludenz is as spectacular as the ascent. Not all the stations we pass are original, some have been washed away by avalanches and storms - this is not an easy place to run a railway! We are incredibly lucky with the weather and so get some fantastic views over the Klostertal mountain range. When we reach the Ill industry pops up more frequently. Bludenz is a busy town- home of Milka Chocolate and the junction with the the Montafonerbahn to Schruns. The character of the route changes completely when we reach Feldkirch, here there is a connection with Switzerland through Liechtenstein. The run to Bregenz along the ausbaustrecke is busy, you will be amazed just how many freight facilities you can spot including the new Vbf at Wolfurt, a brewery, an aluminium extrusion works and several engineering factories, plus intermodals and, naturally, timber loading sites. Bregenz is an important tourist town on Lake Constance, benefiting from a stunning setting near the borders with both Germany and Switzerland - a lovely place to conclude our mammoth journey across Austria. We examine the railways south of Vienna to the Hungarian and Slovenian borders. We see the OBB at work and also a private operator - the Steiermärkische Landesbahn (StLB) who run two lines in the area: the standard gauge line from Feldbach to Bad Gleichenberg sees ancient EMUs hauling short strings of modern freight vans! While the Feistritztalbahn runs 760mm gauge steam trains between Weiz and Birkfeld. Running east from Graz is the Steirische Ostbahn, a relatively unknown line linking Austria with Hungary through Szombathely and Györ. Lots of green MAV freight wagons here! The last station on the Südbahn is Spielfeld-Strasse. This is the border exchange point with Slovenian Railways. Strange looking electric locomotives with French antecedents take over from modern OBB machines and head for Ljubljana and the Adriatic. Finally in Graz we are back in the 21st Century and visit the Hbf and the high tech Graz Cargo centre. Narrated RT 82 mins.

It’s a lovely day for a train ride alongside the north Swiss Lakes of Walensee and Zürichsee Our train is IC 572 the 1109 from Chur, where metre gauge connections were made to the fashionable resort of St Moritz, to Zürich and Basel. We join at Sargans with class 460 leading. We know the 460 well, we have filmed from the type before eight hours through the Norwegian mountains! Incredibly we will pass more trains in this 1hr and 10 minutes than we crossed all the way to Bergen! The huge single windscreen of our locomotive makes our cameraman’s life very easy. On time we start our run north and west. There is a lot packed into this run. In addition to all the Swiss trains you would expect there are a dozen freight facilities that we pass all working hard to supply wagons to the SBB Cargo wagonload network. While the route is a delight there are several quite long NBS tunnel sections, these we edit down as we don’t want to keep you in the dark too long! Filmed in July 2006 in lovely early summer weather with the sun behind us.
