The “Missing Volumes” collection of six volumes comprises the first six B&R volumes that were made before professional video editing was available to us back in the 1980s. Their picture and sound quality are inferior to volumes 7 and above and so were withdrawn in the early 1990s. However there are collectors who wish to complete their set of our volumes and the collection is made up especially for them on request.

This is the first volume in this collection and is very first volume of our huge series of archive railway film. Here we feature nearly one hour of original live steam taken on standard and super 8 cine film dating back to 1961.

In the majority of cases sound recordings taken at the time the film was shot have been used to imitate actual sound film. Where no such recordings exist recordings taken at other times have been substituted to give a realistic effect..

The limitations of standard 8 material are borne out in it's reproduction on to video. However where substandard material has been found it has been discarded except in cases where we considered the standard to be out-weighed by the historical content of the shot in question.

SECTION 1: British Railways Steam 1961-68, featuring steam on the Cambrian, in Scotland, N.E. & N.W. England. Scenes from Rose Grove on 3rd. August 1968 where 48666 was derailed. Also the Last BR Specials on the 4th August 1968, a glimpse of the Royal Train and 46235 5 "City of Birmingham" en-route to Birmingham Museum. Plus many other stirring scenes from the past.

SECTION 2:- BR steam specials taken in the 1970s after the return to steam in 1971. Here we feature such locomotives as 6201 "Princess Elizabeth", 4498 "Sir Nigel Gresley", 4930, 92220 "Evening Star", 7812, 850 and many others at work in sunshine, rain and snow. Many scenes were taken on the difficult Shrewbury to Hereford line.

SECTION 3:- The North Yorkshire Moors Railway with stirring scenes taken on train and lineside by the famous 1 in 49 bank up to Goathland. featuring 3395, Lambton No.29, 62005, 1247 and others.

SECTION 4:- The Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway, the most delightful and authentic of all our miniature steam railways. Here we show shed scenes, on train views and captivating high speed lineside shots.

This is the second volume in this collection and improved techniques have further enhanced the quality of this volume over the previous volume.. Once again we feature nearly one hour of original live steam taken on standard and super 8 cine film dating back to 1961. SECTION 1:- British Railways Steam 1961-68. Scenes from in and around Shrewsbury in 1961. Some initial scenes are in Black and White followed by views of Castles, Halls and a County in action. From Shrewsbury we attack the Southern Region travelling to Guildford in 1963. Then to Salisbury for various scenes depicting Bulleid pacifics and BR Standard locomotives. A sad reminder follows showing the desolation after a line is closed. We then continue with high speed trains passing Woking headed by 73118, and Merchant Navy’s 35008 “Orient Line” and 35028 “Clan Line” (now preserved) on 2nd,July 1967. We finish this section with the last two steam movements on the Southern with 9F 92203 and 4MT 75029 passing Guildford after purchase by artist David Shepherd.

SECTION 2:- The Shildon Cavalcade 1975. A fantastic line up of locomotives roll past the camera from the diminutive Wantage Tramway No.5 to 9F 92220 “Evening Star” the last steam locomotive built by BR. We also include scenes from the preparation and build up to the event itself. A historical commentary accompanies this item.

!!

SECTION 3:- Spotlight on 5590 “Leander”.
Historical views of this now famous preserved Jubilee Class engine on her exploits around the country since preservation. Scenes include “Santa Specials” in the Lake District, “Cumbrian Mountain Pullman”, a beautiful scene of No.5960 and Black 5 No.5000 double heading over Ribblehead, more shots of “Leander” on the Welsh Marches and stirring views of her leaving Rainhill and charging across Sankey Viaduct. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway with stirring scenes taken on train and lineside by the famous 1 in 49 bank up to Goathland. featuring 3395, Lambton No.29, 62005, 1247 and others.

However there are collectors who wish to complete their set of our volumes and the collection is made up especially for them on request.

This is the third volume in this collection and here we record original Diesel action taken on standard and super 8 cine film dating back to the 1960s.,

SECTION 11:- Class 47. Undoubtedly the “Black 5” of the diesel era, there are few places in the country where you cannot find a Class 47 (the Isle of Wight being one!) This latter day workworse has proved to be one of BR’s most successful design. Mind you we did catch ine that had failed!

SECTION 12:- Bescot. A look around a modern day marshalling yard, a Class 56 on a Merry Go Round (MGR) working and other scenes.

This is the fourth volume in this special collection and once again features nearly one hour of original live steam taken on standard and super 8 cine film dating back to 1961. Better techniques have further enhanced the quality of this volume over the previous volumes. In the majority of cases sound recordings taken at the time the film was shot have been used to imitate actual sound film. Where no such recordings exist recordings taken at other times have been substituted to give a realistic effect. The limitations of standard 8 material are borne out in it's reproduction on to video.

SECTION 1:- British Railways Steam 1961-68. Most of the footage in this section comes from the collection of Mr. Dobson and features locomotives at work in the North-West of England during the later days of BR steam including BR Standard designs such as several Britannias and a glimpse of a Crosti-boilered 9F. Even some Southern Bulleid pacifics are seen along with some on train shots. All followed by Stanier locomotives including Black 5s and 8Fs as well as Royal Scots and Jubilees. A view of Black 5 No.45156 ex-works on a passenger train contrasts sharply with the general run down condition of most locomotives in this section. Sadly a common feature on BR during this period of 1965-1968.

SECTION 2:- The Complete Rainhill Cavalcade of 1980. Excellent lineside shots taken of the line up of locomotives ranging from the replicas of “Rocket” and “Sanspareil” through “Hardwicke” and “Duchess of Hamilton” to Deltics, HSTs, APTs and the superb examples of coaching and freight rolling stock. Sound effects are accompanied by a brief comment regarding each locomotive in this section.

SECTION 3:- The KWVR. A short visit to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway where we see several of their locos hard at work including un-rebuilt Bulleid pacific “City of Wells”.

SECTION 4:- A4s in Preservation. Plus as an introduction, a memory shot of “Lord Faringdon” on a Glasgow to Perth express to whet the appetite! We also study “Sir Nigel Gresley” fresh out of Crewe in LNER Garter Blue on running-in turns and then out on main line specials. Finally we join 60009 “Union of South Africa” on a run from Edinburgh to Aberdeen.

Vol. 5 - Steam Fantasy

Vol. 5 - Steam Fantasy

Ref: BR005D

Price:£14.99

The “Missing Volumes” collection of six volumes comprises the first six B&R volumes that were made before professional video editing was available to us back in the 1980s. Their picture and sound quality are inferior to volumes 7 and above and so were withdrawn in the early 1990s. However there are collectors who wish to complete their set of our volumes and the collection is made up especially for them on request.

This is the fifth volume in this special collection featuring one hour of original live steam filmed on standard and super 8 cine film. This time it was filmed between 1970 (when steam wasn’t dead) into the 1980s ranging from the grimiest of ancient diminutive industrial tank engines through to the magnificent and majestic lines of restored Stanier Pacific “Princess Elizabeth”. Since most of the film was originally silent, sound recordings taken at the same time as the original film have been added to give an accurate sound effect.

SECTION 1:- Industrial Steam. After main line steam finished on the BR network in August1968, steam was still to be found hard at work in a variety of diverse locations. These included Bold, Polkemmet and Berham Collieries, Acton Lane Power Station, the BP Works at Barry, Coatbridge Steel Works, Whitehaven Docks and Ladysmith Washery. We see Austerity 0-6-0STs, Pecketts, Bagnalls and other typical industrial engines as well as a rare glimpse of a steam Sentinel geared loco plus a fireless engine.

SECTION 2:- Spotlight on “Princess Elizabeth”. 6201 has been very busy since preservation. Here we see it in it’s early years of preservation with a visit to Tyseley and later working a variety of specials such as “The Cathedrals Express”, “The Gwentman”, “The Mercian Venturer” and the “Welsh Marches Pullman”.

SECTION 3:- Main Line Specials - Steam on BR since 1971. Here we see many locomotives that had not been seen in steam for many years including LNWR “Hardwicke”, “Green Arrow”, “Pendennis Castle” (before its sojourn “down-under”), 44871 and 45305. There are some unusual double headings such as a Black 5 and a B1, and “Evening Star” and “Hardwicke”! All adding to the variety of this all steam action section. Plus “Flying Scotsman”, “Leander”, “King George V”, “Morayshire” and No.5051 “Drysllwyn Castle/Earl Bathurst”.

This is the sixth and final volume in this special collection featuring one hour of original live steam filmed in colour on standard and super 8 cine film. Here we feature rare BR steam scenes from 1962 through to the end of steam followed by resurrection of some in the mid 1980s. An authentic soundtrack has been added to the original silent film using sound recordings taken at that time, as well as by an informative commentary,

SECTION 1:- The Winter of 1962. A short cab ride experience during this bitter winter featuring ex-GWR 6928 “Underley Hall” on the difficult Hereford Line.

SECTION 2:- Crewe South Shed 1967. A glimpse of this huge locomotive depot in it’s final terminal years followed by preserved A4 Pacific 4498 “Sir Nigel Gresley” running light around the Shrewsbury Triangle after it’s heavy overhaul and return to ex-LNER Garter Blue livery at Crewe Works.

SECTION 3:- The Last Day of Steam at Shrewsbury, 4th.March 1967
. A sad day and we capture the wide range of locos in action on that day including GWR, LMS and BR Standard classes. Both preserved ex-GWR Castles No.7029 “Clun Castle” and No.4079 “Pendennis Castle” pass through on special last trains.

SECTION 4:- Scrap Yards. A reminder of the sad effects of the mass withdrawal of steam engines in the 1960s as we look at some of the scrap yards.

SECTION 5:- The Resurrection of 80079. Continuing on from the above theme, we observe the restoration of this Standard Class 4 2-6-4T from scrap yard condition to full main line operation. It is seen in all it’s restored glory coupled to Ivatt 4MT 2-6-0 No.43106 on 19th.February 1983 on a Welsh Marches Pullman. From watering at Shrewsbury we follow the pair as they storm onto Hereford, with a photo stop at Craven Arms. Then their return to Bridgnorth on the Severn Valley Railway in the company of No.4930 “Hagley Hall”.

SECTION 6:- GWR Locomotives Preserved. No less than 17 classes are represented from diminutive tanks to the massive “King” Class in conditions ranging from scrap yard to main line running.

SECTION 7:- Stanier Pacific No.46229 “Duchess of Hamilton”.
Today she is re-streamlined, “stuffed-and-mounted” in York Museum but here, before all of that, we see her in all her glory dashing across the Settle & Carlisle line amid breath taking scenery during 1982/3.
