St Pancras to Leicester in the 1980s

The Midland provided a fascinating mix of contrasts in the 1980s. While the line from St Pancras to Bedford was electrified, the section through Wellingborough to Leicester had changed relatively little since the days of steam. In this programme we take a ride in the cab of an HST and on the way explore the railway, its traffic, stations and structures.

In this volume we see:

  • A Cab Ride from St Pancras to Leicester in the cab of an HST in the summer of 1987. Includes scenes at St Pancras and the line through the London suburbs in the 1980s and the 1970s.
  • The journey from Bedford over the summit at Sharnbrook and down the grade through Irchester to Wellingborough.
  • The semaphore signalling at Wellingborough with views of the Signal Box and yards and signalling at Finedon Road.
  • Steam and diesel traction in and around Wellingborough and Kettering in the early 1960s.
  • The journey through Market Harborough to Leicester and the junctions at Glendon and Wigston.

Vintage Cab Ride 1971 Part 1: St.Pancras to Market Harborough

Vintage Cab Ride 1971 Part 1: St.Pancras to Market Harborough

Ref: TV738D

Price:£16.99

This programme is truly unique. We take you back to 1971 to experience a cab ride along the former Midland Railway from St.Pancras to Market Harborough.

Originally the professionally filmed footage was taken for use in an Advanced Passenger Train (APT) driving simulator but was never actually used. At the time of the cab ride a whole fleet of now long vanished locos worked the Midland Main Line services. You see countless Class 45s rushing past on expresses, the slightly less powerful Class 44s on freight and Classes 20, 25, 31 and 47 provide the supporting cast.

There are old semaphores, long forgotten loops & branches, and stations years away from modernisation. In addition to the extensive cab footage, lineside material from the period is also included plus a view from the 1990s at a few select locations.

Wolverton Rail Note: Contrast this video with "Cab Ride 09: St.Pancras - Sheffield" filmed in May '86 (RS650D) and the more recent "Midland Main Line" (VI990D) where it looks completely different and a lot of railway has gone.
