Industrial steam is seen next and very much at work in the ironstone industry. Ivo Peters first visited the Isle-of-Man in 1962 (see Volume 9). He visited the island again in 1963 and spent the first week of July filming and photographing activities on both the north and the south lines out of Douglas.

In this volume, we look at the general daily maintenance of the locomotives, along with the sorting of stock for the day's running.

We then travel the southern line towards Port Erin, followed by the northern route, first to St Johns and then on towards Peel and Ramsey.

Ivo filmed at most stations as well many locations in between including the two viaducts on the Ramsey line and 'the race' out of St Johns. with his customary unerring eye for a beautiful setting.

A map of the island showing the railways, plus a complete listing of all the steam locomotives on the Isle-of-Man Steam Railway is on the inside cover.

This is the last ‘annual’ in Julian Peters’ remarkable Collection based on his father’s superb 16mm colour films of railway subjects. The programme contains the usual entertaining and some- times heart-rending nostalgic mix of BR steam operation on main and branch lines, plus some rare and fascinating footage of industrial railways.

Main line locations visited include Mangotsfield, Chipping Sodbury Tunnel, Charlbury Troughs and Westbury. The branch lines filmed are the Hapsworth quarry line near Frome and the Cromford & High Peak. The lat- ter sequence includes some unforgettable film taken on the last day of operation and featuring J94-hauled trains attacking the famous 1 in 14 Hopton Incline.

After a record of Ivo’s last visit to Swindon to see Pendennis Castle handed over to its purchaser, the first half of the film concludes with a series of unpublished shots on the Somerset & Dorset. A dramatic incident in the form of a blow-back on the footplate of the BR standard loco upon which Ivo was riding is also filmed and gives the viewer an unmistakable impression of the potential seriousness of such a situation.

The second half of the programme is devoted to industrial lines, most of which were moving very close to the end of steam operation. These include NCB collieries at Norton Hill, Waterside and Baddesley (where we see the Garratt William Francis) and finally ironstone lines at Wroxton and Irchester.

The quality of picture and sound is naturally superb throughout. There is not doubt that it is a privilege to be able to view Ivo’s painstaking records of a much-loved scene that vanished three decades ago. For this experience enthusiasts must thank Julian Peters for his initiative in mastering the original films on to videotape.
